DESCRIPTION:This lap quilt is fast and easy and requires no quilting. Three layers of flannel are used to add warmth and color. The Acuquilt system does all the cutting for you. This lap quilt could be a memory quilt with the inclusion of bits of cloth from the clothing of a loved one. Perhaps clothes your child wore as a baby can be included\, bringing back memories of their childhood. You could also fussy cut a flannel fabric with fun images and create an ?eye spy? quilt. The blocks created in the block party classes will be cut using the Acuquilt cutting system. This system improves accuracy in cutting and reduces the stress on your hands often felt while cutting large amounts of small units of fabric for the quilt blocks.

DESCRIPTION:In this dynamic two day class students will forge a billet of pattern welded damascus\, then forge heat treat\, grind polish and etch several 2-3? bladed all steel paring knives. These little knives though relatively quick to make\, are extremely useful in the kitchen and a wonderful platform to explore how thickness and geometry of the edge contribute to a knife’s cutting abilities. Most students complete at least two knives in the class. This repetition is essential to cementing the skills learned in the class\, allowing students to truly learn from mistakes and reinforce the lessons learned. Skills covered include: basic forge welding of damascus steel\, pattern development in damascus steel\, forging blades to shape\, basic heat treating of knives\, grinding and finishing of knives\, etching damascus steel and sharpening knives.

DESCRIPTION:This copper ornament class will allow you to make your choice of 2 of the 3 items advertised. The process will have you cutting out the pieces\, forming and texturing on an anvil. You will also be using a small torch as part of the texturing process\, and soldering. The maple leaf ornament will have a “glass drop” soldered into the center. The mushroom can be used to hold your jewelry\, earrings\, and rings. The cap can be lifted off to slide rings on the stem. The stem is epoxied to a piece of bluestone serving as the base. The fern is a wall ornament that can be hung or laid in a windowsill. The fern is 10 inches tall\, the maple leaf is 5 inches by 5 inches and the mushroom is 5 inches tall.

SUMMARY:Stained Glass for Beginners
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop we will complete a small Tiffany style suncatcher\, ornament\, or flower. Students will be able to choose a pre-drawn pattern from a variety of designs and be guided as they learn to cut the glass (chosen from a variety of types and colors)\, smooth the glass pieces with a grinder\, apply copper foil tape\, solder the pieces together into the final piece using lead-free solder\, and add jump rings or a copper wire stem. The patterns available will offer a variety of levels of difficulty so students may choose what best suits them.

DESCRIPTION:If you’ve taken Taste of the Forge or another basic blacksmithing class at AFS\, then you’re ready for Taste of the Forge II! This class\, taught by blacksmith Steve Gurzler\, builds on the students’ prior experience to bring them to the next level\, pursuing more advanced skills. Like in Taste of the Forge\, we will follow the Artist Blacksmiths Association of North America (ABANA) curriculum in a small class format. Every third Wednesday of the month during our blacksmithing season\, come see demonstrations by expert blacksmith Steve Gurzler. Observing the demonstration is free and open to the public. If you want to try your hand at blacksmithing there is a $25 fee to cover the cost of materials. Safety precautions must be followed – including hard shoes with no open toes\, long pants\, goggles (supplied) and gloves (supplied).
